ARSENAL made a winning start of the New year with a 3-0 defeat of Birmingham at St.Andrews yesterday. Robin Van Persie got Arsenal going as early in the 12th minute before Samir Nasri scored a beauty in the 58th minute. Birmingham defender Roger Johnson complete Alex Mcleish misery with an own goal in the 65th minute.
Birmingham still fresh from their dramatic 1-1 draw against Manchester United in their previous match looks confident with their tough tackling style of play against the visitor. But Arsenal showed they are matured enough to withstand the robust and physical side of play from the home side as the continued to play their passing game.
In the first ten minutes the Birmingham defenders continued to give away free kicks following a foul and late tackle and they paid heavy price for it when Arsenal took the lead from a free-kick in the 12th minute
Defender Scott Dan pulled down Robin Van Persie just outside the box. The Dutch striker free kick took a cruel deflection of the arms of Lee Bowyer in the wall went past the helpless goalkeeper Ben Foster.
Five minutes later, Arsenal goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski made a great save to deny former Arsenal, Sebastian Larson great effort from a free kick.
But in the 37th minute Birmingham missed out a glorious opportunity when Roger Johnson simple tap in front the goal mouth but to their horror it went over the bar after Jerome cleverly flick header.
In the second half, Arsenal on a few occasion should have double the lead with Jack Wilshire and Theo Walcott wasting the opportunity. The usually reliable Samir Nasri too had a great chance to score when he was set free by Cesc Fabregas in the box. But Ben Foster made a splendid left hand saves.
Arsenal just refused to stop and in the 58th minute they were rewarded when Samir Nasri team up with Cesc Fabregas and the French footballer deliver the final execution with sheer perfection.
Both was once again behind Arsenal third goal. A neat touch between those two saw Fabregas rammed a shot at Foster at the near post. The ball bounce off straight like a pinball strike Scott Dan and Johnson legs cruelly went into the net in the 65th minute.
