The home side playing in front of 26,881 at Reebok Stadium took the lead through Daniel Sturridge header after Samir Nasri had cleared Gary Cahill initial header off the line. A second-half goal from Robin van Persie had earlier looked to have earned a draw for Arsene Wenger's side. The Holland striker scored three minutes into the second half after an exceptional Gunners move.
Bolton skipper Kevin Davies missed a penalty right at the start of the second half after Johan Djourou caught Sturridge. The spot-kick from Davies was tame and straight down the middle and Wojciech Szczesny made a save with his legs.
Twice Cesc Fabregas attempt was brilliantly tip round the post by Jussi Jaaskelainen in the first half and his firm drive after the break was save by the post.
