ASTON VILLA STUNNED ARSENAL 2-1 AT THE EMIRATES

Thomas Vermaelen back in the team
TWO vital goals by striker Darrent Bent in the first half was enough to secured Aston Villa  an important 2-1 win against Arsenal at the Emirates last night. Despite Robin Van Persie late goal in the dying minutes proved too be to late to save the match.

Things are going from bad to worse for Arsenal here at the Emirates, with the hosts 2-0 down to a largely superior Aston Villa. The Villains flew out of the blocks in comparison to a sluggish and demoralised Arsenal, and they quickly took the lead when Darren Bent made the most of a poor clearance in the 11th minute.

Bent doubled his tally four minutes later from a clever short free kick routine, a goal which Villa richly deserved. From the 30th minute onwards the hosts began to push forward, and Aaron Ramsey had a penalty shout turned down before Robin Van Persie hit the post and would have scored twice more were it not for the heroic interventions of Richard Dunne.

The home fans are cheering Thomas Vermaelen's every touch of the ball; the Belgian centre back was not expected to start today after recently making a recovery from long-term injury. It's good to see him back in action but mark his return with a defeat.

With the season drawing to a close and footballing fates being decided up and down the country, Arsenal and Aston Villa would appear to have less to play for than most. But all is not as it seems; the Gunners have encountered such a poor run of form lately  that they are in real danger of conceding third place and automatic entry to the Champions League group stages to new kids on the block Manchester City.
